Why Your Spiritual Life Has Seasons (And What to Do in Each One)

Pastor Lee Cummings
March 22, 2026 Message Recap

God works in seasons, and oftentimes we feel confused, lost, or don’t understand why we’re in them. When we begin to understand how the fullness of God meets us in those times, our perspective shifts. Not every season will feel the same; some bring joy, pain, and growth, but God is the same throughout it all.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us that there is a time for everything. That includes our spiritual lives.

God Uses Different Seasons

God is intentional about using different seasons to grow us. Have you ever felt like you’ve been through any of the seasons below?

New beginnings: This is when we accept Christ and begin our lives as Christians. We learn what it means to follow Jesus and who He is (1 Peter 2:2).

Growth and formation: This is where our faith becomes steady and part of our everyday routine. We learn to build consistency through obedience, time with the Lord, and deepen our relationship with Christ (Colossians 2:6–7).

Testing: These are harder seasons. Things feel uncertain, our faith feels stretched, and we wonder why we’re experiencing trials. This is where we learn to trust God over our circumstances (James 1:2–4).

Fruitfulness: We begin to see growth in our character and in how we impact others. We live out our faith on mission, using our spiritual gifts to impact others (John 15:5).

Pruning: God removes things that are no longer needed in our lives—even good things. This is a season where we trust that He is preparing us, not taking from us (John 15:2).

How Do We Get Through These Seasons?

Spiritual maturity isn’t about controlling the season we’re in; it’s about responding well to it.

Be faithful in this season
You don’t need a different season to grow. You need to be faithful in this one.

Stay rooted in the basics
Prayer, Scripture, and community will carry you through every season—even when nothing feels exciting.

Don’t rush the process
Growth takes time. Trying to skip ahead often leads to shallow faith.

Pay attention to what God is doing
Instead of asking, “How do I get out of this season?” ask, “What is God teaching me here?”

Trust God’s timing
Just as natural seasons change, spiritual ones do too—but not always quickly. God knows what He’s doing.

The goal isn’t to get to a “better” season. The goal is to trust God and grow in every season.

FAQ: Spiritual Seasons

How do I know what season I’m in?
Look at what God is doing in your life right now. Is He growing you, testing you, or asking you to let something go?

Is a hard season a bad sign?
No. Difficult seasons are often where the most growth happens. God uses them to strengthen your faith.

What if I feel stuck?
Stay faithful in the basics—prayer, Scripture, and community. Growth often happens quietly, even when you don’t feel it.

God puts you into tests not to destroy you, but to reveal you. He allows you to go through trials not so that they defeat you, but so that, in those moments, character is developed within you.
