What can I do to help calm myself during a panic attack?
The goal when you’re feeling panicked is to ground yourself back in the moment. Remember, panic attacks are temporary and will stop. Here are some helpful ways to ground yourself in the moment:
Look around the room & name:
Five things you can see
Four things you can hear
Three things you can feel
Two things you can smell
One thing you can taste
Slow down your breathing by using “Square Breathing”
Breathe in for four seconds
Hold for four
Breathe out for four
Hold again for four
Keep going until you feel the panic starting to ease.
What are some ways I can practice Self-Care?
Taking care of your body and soul helps you take care of your mind. Try to eat as healthily as you can.
Move
Even if it’s just a little each day, bonus points if you can get outside to exercise.
Stay social
Try calling a friend or family member. Plan a game night.
Set routine
Try setting and keeping a routine for yourself.
Let go
Avoid worrying about things that are out of your control. Instead, look for things that you can change for the better and do them. Try to practice flexibility and release the other things to God.
How can I be available to and reach out to people in my life?
One of the biggest ways our brain regulates uncomfortable emotions is through the presence of other people who see, hear, and love us.
Listen
First and foremost, learn how to listen without jumping in and solving the problem.
Practice curiosity
Practice curiosity with your own emotions and those around you. It’s okay for you and for others to feel what you/they feel.
Reach Out
Just by reaching out and offering your love and your presence to someone you know who might be struggling, you’re already be doing a lot.
