The Generational Influence of Women
How can the church better recognize, honor, and support the unseen spiritual labor of women?
Speaker: Pastor Lee Cummings
Date: May 10, 2026
Some of the greatest spiritual influences in the history of the Church are women. In this Mother’s Day message, Pastor Lee Cummings shares how mothers, grandmothers, and spiritual moms shape generations through their prayers, faith, and everyday example.
Here's a 5-day devotional guide based on this sermon:
Day 1: The Bridge of Faith
Reading: 2 Timothy 1:3–7
Devotional: Paul reminds Timothy that his genuine faith first dwelt in his grandmother, Lois, and his mother, Eunice. Faith was never meant to be a one-generation reality but a multi-generational inheritance. Like a bridge connecting two shores, faithful mothers and spiritual mentors carry the Gospel from one generation to the next. Your influence may feel invisible, but heaven sees what others overlook. The prayers whispered in quiet moments, the scriptures shared at bedtime, the worship modeled in hardship—these silent acts build bridges that last for eternity. Today, consider: What bridge are you building? Whose faith are you carrying forward, and to whom are you passing it on?
Day 2: Faithful in the Unseen Places
Reading: Matthew 1:1–6
Devotional: God chose to honor four women in Jesus' genealogy—women who were outsiders, overlooked, or carrying shame. Tamar was mistreated. Rahab was a prostitute. Ruth was a foreigner and widow. Yet their faithful responses in hidden moments changed history. The most powerful places of influence are often invisible: kitchen tables, bedside prayers, quiet intercession. You may never know the full impact of your obedience in the moment, but God is writing your story into His greater story. Your faithfulness in the unseen places matters eternally. What "small" act of obedience is God asking of you today? Trust that He sees and honors your hidden yes.
Day 3: Choosing Covenant Over Comfort
Reading: Ruth 1:15–18
Devotional: Ruth faced a choice: return to the familiar comfort of Moab or journey into the unknown with Naomi toward the God of Israel. Her declaration—"Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God"—was a covenant choice that shaped generations. Timothy faced a similar crossroads, choosing his mother's God over his father's idols. Choosing faith often means choosing the harder path, the misunderstood road, the costly commitment. But covenant loyalty—to God, to family, to faith—creates a legacy that outlives us. Where is God calling you to choose covenant over comfort? What familiar pattern must you leave behind to follow Him more fully?
Day 4: The Power of Silent Strength
Reading: Luke 1:26–38
Devotional: When the angel appeared to Mary, her world turned upside down. The plans she made evaporated. She would face stigma, questions, and misunderstanding. Yet her response—"Be it to me according to your word"—changed eternity. Silent strength is not passive; it's the active choice to trust God when circumstances make no sense. Mothers and spiritual leaders exercise this strength daily: worshiping through pain, praying when answers seem distant, standing firm when children wander. Hell fights this silent influence because it knows its power. Your consistency in faith, your refusal to quit, your worship in the wilderness—these shake both heaven and hell. Keep standing. Your silent strength is shaping the future.
Day 5: Strengthening the Church for Tomorrow
Reading: Acts 16:1–5
Devotional: Because of Eunice and Lois's faithful discipleship, Timothy became a leader who strengthened churches and increased disciples daily. One mother's silent influence created ripples that touched the ancient world—and still impact us today. The church desperately needs the prayers, wisdom, and spiritual mothering that women provide. Whether you're a biological mother, grandmother, or spiritual mother in the faith, your role is irreplaceable. You are not second-class; you are essential. Your prayers avail much. Your influence matters. As you invest in the next generation through teaching, modeling faith, and interceding, you're building the church that will outlast you. Who is God calling you to disciple? What spiritual legacy will you leave?
