Day 1: A Prisoner With a Purpose
Revelation 1:9–11 | 2 Timothy 1:8
John was exiled to a rock quarry as an old man, yet Scripture calls him a partner "in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance that are in Jesus." Paul later encourages Timothy not to be ashamed of suffering for the gospel, but to share in it by the power of God. Circumstances that look like the end of usefulness are often exactly where God is preparing the next assignment. John's prison cell became the birthplace of Revelation.
Day 2: The Voice That Turns Us
Revelation 1:12–16 | Psalm 34:5–6
When John turned, he didn't see the gentle teacher he remembered, but a glorified Christ with eyes like fire and a voice like rushing water. David wrote that those who look to God are radiant, their faces never covered with shame. Turning toward Jesus, especially in a moment we didn't expect Him, is what David meant by looking to Him. It is a decision to redirect our attention in the middle of whatever we are facing.
Day 3: Fear Not, I Am the First and the Last
Revelation 1:17–18 | Isaiah 41:10
John fell at Jesus' feet like a dead man, overwhelmed by what he saw, and the first thing Jesus said was, fear not. Isaiah promises the same reassurance centuries earlier: do not fear, for I am with you. Every true encounter with the fullness of who Jesus is will be overwhelming, and every true encounter will also include His hand of comfort. He never reveals His glory to leave us undone without also holding us steady.
Day 4: The Pile of Rocks
Revelation 1:19 | Genesis 50:20
John's daily view on Patmos was quite literally a pile of rocks, hard labor with no apparent purpose. Centuries earlier, Joseph could have said the same thing about slavery and prison, yet he later told his brothers that what was meant for evil, God meant for good. What looks like a dead end in your story might be the exact place God is writing the next chapter, if you're willing to turn and let Him show you.
Day 5: Little Children, Love One Another
2 Corinthians 3:18 | John 13:34–35
By the end of his life, John's entire message had distilled down to one repeated line: little children, love one another. He explained it simply: it is the Lord's command, and if we do this, it is enough. Jesus told His disciples the same thing the night before He died, that love for one another would be the mark that identified them as His followers. Whatever else your theology becomes, it was never meant to grow more complicated than that.
