How should leadership in the church work today? And what does good, healthy leadership actually look like? In this sermon, Pastor Sonny Misar explains how leadership is designed to help protect and guide the church.

Here's a 5-day devotional guide based on this sermon:

Day 1: The Kingdom Government

Reading: Isaiah 9:6–7; Matthew 6:9–13

Devotional: Before Christ was born, Isaiah prophesied that the government would rest upon His shoulders. When you prayed to receive Christ, you entered His kingdom and submitted to His governance. This is not restrictive—it is liberating. Your own self-governance likely brought chaos and disappointment. God’s rule brings peace, order, and purpose. Today, reflect on areas where you are still trying to maintain control. The kingdom of God manifests wherever God rules. Each time you obey God instead of your flesh, you operate in His kingdom.

Day 2: Leadership by Design

Reading: Genesis 1:26–28; Ephesians 4:11–16

Devotional:
Leadership is not damage control from the fall—it is part of God’s original design. Before sin entered the world, God delegated governance to humanity, making us His image-bearers. This reveals something profound: God values order, structure, and delegated authority. In the church, Christ gives specific gifts—apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers—to equip believers for ministry. These are not positions of power but callings to service. Today, pray for your spiritual leaders by name. Thank God for placing them in your life. Consider how you can honor and support their ministry as they keep watch over your soul.

Day 3: The Shepherd’s Protection

Reading: Acts 20:28–31; 1 Peter 5:1–4

Devotional: Paul’s farewell to the Ephesian elders reveals what moved him to tears: the reality that wolves would come to devour the flock. Biblical governance is not just about organization—it is about protection. Elders must be both velvet and steel: tender toward the sheep, fierce against threats. You need spiritual covering. The enemy prowls like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour, but God has placed shepherds to watch over you. Are you allowing yourself to be known and covered by spiritual leadership, or are you wandering as a spiritual vagabond?

Day 4: Qualified by Character

Reading: 1 Timothy 3:1–7; Titus 1:5–9

Devotional: Notice what is missing from the biblical qualifications for church leaders: wealth, charisma, social influence, or a domineering personality. Instead, God prioritizes character—faithfulness, self-control, gentleness, hospitality, and skillful teaching. The best leaders are not those who aggressively pursue position but those who humbly recognize the weight of responsibility. God does not call the qualified; He qualifies the called. Today, examine your own character development. Are you growing in the fruit of the Spirit? Are you managing your household well? Are you known for integrity among unbelievers? Character is the foundation for every calling God places on your life.

Day 5: Joyful Submission

Reading: Hebrews 13:17; 1 Thessalonians 5:12–13

Devotional: “Obey your leaders and submit to them” sounds countercultural in our individualistic age. Yet this verse reveals a beautiful truth: spiritual leaders keep watch over your soul and will give an account to Christ. They carry a sacred responsibility for your spiritual well-being. Your willing submission allows them to serve with joy rather than groaning—and that benefits you directly. This is not blind obedience to imperfect people; it is recognition that Christ has placed covering over your life through His church. Are you making your leaders’ work a joy or a burden? Do you receive correction with humility? Do you engage with the church community, or do you remain on the periphery?
